An Indiana paycheck usually carries two income tax lines: a flat state tax and a county tax. All 92 counties levy one, at their own rates, and both are worked out from the same taxable wages after the exemptions on your Form WH-4. Because of that second line, two workers on the same salary can take home different amounts if they live in different counties.

Which county’s rate applies depends on where you lived on January 1, not where you work. An Indiana resident pays the rate of their home county on that date for the whole year, even after moving or taking a job in another county, and owes nothing to the county they commute into. A worker who lives outside Indiana pays the rate of the Indiana county where they principally worked on January 1. The calculator asks for both counties so it can follow these rules; the Marion County, Lake County and Allen County pages show worked examples.

The WH-4 works with exemptions rather than allowances. There is one each for you and a spouse, with extras for age or blindness, and larger ones for dependents, a first-time dependent claim and adopted children. The form has no line for claiming exemption from withholding, so most workers see some state and county tax taken.

Indiana has reciprocal agreements with five states: Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. Residents of those states who file Form WH-47 are exempt from the state tax only. The county tax still applies to them if their main place of work on January 1 is in an Indiana county, which matters for commuters from the Louisville and Cincinnati areas. Illinois is not on the list, so a Chicago-area resident working in northwest Indiana has Indiana tax withheld and claims credit at home.

There is no employee payroll levy in Indiana. Enter your pay and both counties below to see each paycheck.

How Indiana taxes your paycheck

State income tax withholding

On the tax return, Indiana taxes income at a single rate of 2.95%. Employers withhold at the same rate, after the allowances or exemptions claimed on the state withholding form. The withholding figures here follow Indiana's own instructions for employers.

For a single filer paid every two weeks, Indiana withholds 3.0% of a $30,000 salary and 2.9% of $150,000:
