Corrections policy
When a figure here is wrong, we fix it quickly and say so publicly. This is how a report becomes a correction.
1. We check the report against the source
Every report is checked against the primary source for the rule involved: the IRS publication, the state's withholding guide or the local tax office's notice listed on the sources page. A difference from another calculator is not on its own an error, because calculators differ in what they assume; a difference from the source is.
2. We fix it and add a test
The rule or the code is corrected, and the scenario that exposed the error becomes a new automated test, so the same mistake cannot return unnoticed. The fix goes live only when every test passes.
3. We record it
Every correction that changes a figure is listed in the changelog with the date, what was wrong, which pages it affected and what changed. Pages with that rule show the new "rules checked" date. Spelling and layout fixes are not listed.
Timing
A wrong tax figure is our first priority. Most are fixed within a few days of being confirmed; a change that needs a state to publish new guidance can take longer, and the affected pages say so in the meantime.
Reporting an error
Use Report a problem under any result, or email [email protected]. If we decide the figure was right, we will reply with the source and the calculation so you can see why.
