How pay periods convert
Every conversion goes through the year. Multiply the paycheck by the number of paychecks a year, then divide by the number in the period you want: 52 weekly, 26 every two weeks, 24 twice a month and 12 monthly. It works with gross pay or take-home pay alike, as long as you convert like with like.
A $2,500.00 paycheck every two weeks is $65,000 a year and $5,416.67 a month on average. Doubling it gives $5,000.00, which understates the month by $416.67: the two extra paychecks a year are spread across all twelve months.
The same pay, every period
| Period | From $2,500.00 every two weeks | From $1,200.00 a week |
|---|---|---|
| Weekly | $1,250.00 | $1,200.00 |
| Every two weeks | $2,500.00 | $2,400.00 |
| Twice a month | $2,708.33 | $2,600.00 |
| Monthly | $5,416.67 | $5,200.00 |
| Yearly | $65,000.00 | $62,400.00 |
Budgeting with a two-week paycheck
Bills come monthly; biweekly pay does not. The steady approach is to budget on two paychecks a month and treat the extra ones as a bonus for savings or debt. Counting from the first Friday of January 2026, the three-paycheck months are January and July. If you would rather budget on the average, use the monthly figure above, which is what the budget calculator expects.
For a salary, the same logic runs in reverse: divide by 26 for a two-week paycheck before tax. For pay after tax, the take-home pay calculator gives the year, the month and each paycheck.
Which pay schedules employers use
Every two weeks is the most common schedule in the United States, followed by weekly pay, which is usual in construction, hospitality and other hourly work. Twice-a-month pay suits salaried staff because each paycheck is the same size and lines up with monthly bills, but hourly staff on it see uneven checks, since a half month can hold ten or eleven working days. Monthly pay is rare outside some public employers and small firms.
Many states set the minimum: some require at least twice-monthly pay for most workers, and a few require weekly pay for manual laborers. The schedule also shapes withholding. Payroll tables are built per pay period, so a monthly paycheck is not taxed more heavily than four weekly ones; over the year the withholding comes out nearly the same, as the take-home pay calculator shows for any salary.
A switch of schedule, say from twice a month to every two weeks, changes the size of each check by about $192.31 at the salary in the example, and adds two paydays to the year. Nothing is lost or gained over the year; the money arrives in smaller, more frequent amounts.
What the inputs mean
- Amount: one paycheck, gross or net.
- How often it comes: weekly, every two weeks, twice a month, monthly or yearly.
- Hours a week: only used for the hourly figure.
Common mistakes
- Multiplying a biweekly check by two for the month. It is close but short, as the example shows.
- Mixing gross and net. Convert take-home pay for a budget, gross pay for a loan application.
- Using four weeks a month. A month averages a little over four and a third weeks.
Pay period questions
How much is $2,500.00 every two weeks per month?
$5,416.67 a month on average, because 26 paychecks a year divided by 12 months is more than two a month. A year of them is $65,000.
Is biweekly the same as twice a month?
No. Biweekly means every two weeks, 26 paychecks a year. Twice a month (semimonthly) means 24, usually on fixed dates such as the 15th and the last day. The same $2,500.00 paycheck is $65,000 a year biweekly and $60,000 a year twice a month.
How do I turn a weekly paycheck into a monthly amount?
Multiply by 52 and divide by 12. A $1,200.00 weekly paycheck is $5,200.00 a month on average, not four times the paycheck.
Which figure should I give a landlord or lender?
Gross monthly income, before tax, unless they ask for take-home pay. Lenders work from gross pay for debt-to-income ratios. A pay stub showing year-to-date gross pay is the usual proof.
Which months have three paychecks in 2026?
If you are paid every two weeks starting on the first Friday of January, January and July have three paydays, 26 in all for the year. With a different first payday the months shift, so count from your own pay calendar.
